Cemetery Compliance Guide

Cemetery Regulations

Granite grave markers in New Jersey are governed by the individual policies of each cemetery, which specify permitted dimensions, surface finish requirements, and installation procedures. Flat-grave sections — where granite flat markers and flush markers are the required style — carry especially specific dimension limits. Many NJ cemeteries also specify whether the granite top face must be polished, thermal-finished, or sawn. Granite Marker Shop reviews each cemetery's current policy before cutting any granite, confirming that the marker we produce meets every applicable requirement for the ground where it will be placed.

Foundation Requirements

New Jersey's seasonal climate demands properly anchored granite grave markers. Most NJ cemeteries require a concrete foundation beneath ground-level markers, reaching below the frost line — typically at least 36 inches in northern NJ counties — to prevent frost heave and settling. Granite Marker Shop's installation team prepares and pours the required foundation at each installation as part of our standard service. We do not leave foundation preparation to separate contractors or to the family. Our team handles the complete installation from foundation preparation through final leveling and confirmation of cemetery compliance.

Religious Cemetery Considerations

Granite grave markers installed at faith-affiliated cemeteries in New Jersey — including Catholic, Jewish, and Eastern Orthodox grounds throughout Essex, Morris, Bergen, and other counties — may be subject to additional requirements concerning religious imagery, inscription formatting, and marker height. Granite Marker Shop contacts denominational cemetery offices directly to review these requirements before beginning the design process. Every granite grave marker we produce is designed to comply with both the cemetery's general marker policy and any faith-specific guidelines that apply to the specific section of the ground.

Granite Grave Marker

A granite grave marker is the most enduring and widely used form of grave memorial in New Jersey. Granite is chosen for its density, its low water absorption, and its ability to hold hand-carved and engraved detail clearly across decades of NJ weather — frost, summer heat, and the wet seasons that characterize the state's climate. Granite Marker Shop produces granite grave markers in flat and flush configurations for cemeteries that require grade-level memorials, as well as slightly raised and pillow-style markers where cemetery policy permits them. All granite is American-made — quarried domestically and processed in our Morris County, NJ workshop without compromise on material quality. Granite varieties available include Absolute Black, the most commonly requested material for its high contrast and fine crystalline structure; Silver Gray, which offers a softer visual tone; Balmoral Red, a warm-toned option; and Indian Mahogany, for families who prefer deeper earth colors. Inscriptions and imagery on granite grave markers can be executed by hand-carving, precision sandblasting, or a combination of both techniques, depending on the design's complexity and the cemetery's requirements. Portrait photographs can be rendered directly on the polished granite surface through high-contrast engraving. As veteran and military marker specialists, Granite Marker Shop produces granite grave markers for veterans, including private companion markers designed to complement VA-provided government headstones at NJ cemeteries. Flat and flush granite markers satisfy the flush-marker requirements at many New Jersey cemetery sections. Pillow markers — with their slightly rounded top surfaces — are a traditional option in older NJ cemeteries that permit them.

Granite Options

The granite Granite Marker Shop uses for grave markers is American-made — quarried in the United States and processed to our workshop's standards. Absolute Black granite is the most requested variety because its tight, uniform grain holds the sharpest hand-carved detail and provides the strongest contrast against any lettering color. Silver Gray offers a neutral, dignified background that suits a range of inscription styles. Balmoral Red and Indian Mahogany introduce warmer earth tones — often chosen by families who want a marker that reads as less austere against a green cemetery lawn. Granite grave markers from Granite Marker Shop are polished on the inscription face and finished with the edge profile — polished, thermal, or sawn — that the cemetery requires or the family prefers. The polished face resists moisture absorption and staining, and maintains the legibility of inscriptions longer than rough or unpolished surfaces.

Custom Design Process

Designing a granite grave marker at Granite Marker Shop begins with understanding exactly what the family wants to express and what the cemetery will permit. A consultation at our Morris County showroom — or by telephone in English, Russian, or Polish — establishes the inscription, any imagery, the granite variety, and the cemetery's requirements. We then verify the cemetery's policy and produce a scaled design proof for family review and approval. No granite is cut until the family confirms the proof is correct. After approval, the marker is fabricated in our workshop — American-made granite, hand-carved and hand-finished by our artisans — and delivered and installed at the cemetery by our own team. From consultation through installation, families have a consistent point of contact within Granite Marker Shop.

Our Process

Our Hand-Carving Process

Step one is the consultation. At our Morris County, NJ showroom or by telephone in English, Russian, or Polish, we learn what the family wants to commemorate and what cemetery the marker will go to. We discuss granite variety, inscription text, imagery, and any specifics about the grave site. Step two is cemetery verification. We request and review the cemetery's current marker policy — dimensions, required surface finish, foundation specifications, and any restrictions on relief elements or imagery. This step ensures the design we develop is installable. Step three is the design proof. Our artisans produce a scaled drawing of the granite marker, showing the inscription, imagery, and border at the confirmed permitted dimensions. The family reviews and approves this proof before fabrication begins. Step four is fabrication. The approved granite marker is cut from American-made domestic granite in our Morris County workshop. Our artisans apply hand tools to lettering and imagery as the design requires, checking each element against the approved proof. Step five is quality review. The completed marker is inspected against the approved design in full — dimensions, inscription, imagery, surface finish. Over 80 years of American-made, hand-carved grave markers inform this standard. Step six is installation. Our team delivers the granite grave marker to the cemetery, prepares the concrete foundation to the specified depth and dimensions, and installs the marker level and compliant with the cemetery's requirements.

What Families Say

New Jersey families have entrusted us with their memorials for three generations.

“My grandmother's marker was done by Granite Marker Shop over 40 years ago. When my grandfather passed, we came back to the same family — and the craftsmanship was just as good. That kind of consistency matters.” — Catherine, Bergen County NJ
Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

If you do not see your question here, call us.

How long does it take to design and install a grave markers?

Granite grave markers typically take eight to twelve weeks from design approval to installation. Simple flat markers with standard text inscriptions are often completed sooner; markers with portrait etchings, multiple languages, or hand-carved relief imagery require additional time. We confirm a timeline estimate at the consultation stage and update families at each milestone.

Do you serve cemeteries throughout New Jersey?

Yes. Granite Marker Shop serves cemeteries throughout all 14 New Jersey counties. Our installation team handles all coordination with cemetery administration — including verifying granite marker requirements and scheduling the installation — so families do not manage those steps themselves.

Are your memorials cemetery-compliant?

Yes. Every granite grave marker from Granite Marker Shop is designed to meet the specific requirements of the receiving cemetery. We review the cemetery's written policy before fabrication begins and size and finish the marker to comply with every applicable rule.

Can I bring my own design or photo?

Yes. Portrait photographs, religious symbols, family crests, military insignia, and custom decorative imagery can all be incorporated into a granite grave marker design. We produce a scaled design proof showing how all imagery will appear before any granite is cut.

Do you offer veteran companion markers?

Yes. As veteran and military marker specialists, Granite Marker Shop produces granite grave markers for veterans and private companion markers to accompany VA-provided government headstones. We coordinate placement at NJ veterans' cemeteries and private grounds with veterans' sections directly.

What languages do you serve families in?

Yes — English, Russian, and Polish.
